"I Am Not My Hair"

"...Hey (hey)
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am not your expectations, no (hey)
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am the soul that lives within..."

The song titled I Am Not My Hair was released in 2006 by India Arie ft. Akon.  At the time I was only 11 years old so I didn't grasp the full meaning of the song. All I remember is my older sister, who was about 17 years old, would blast this song all the time.

"...Good hair means curls and waves (no)
Bad hair means you look like a slave (no)
At the turn of the century
It's time for us to redefine who we be
You can shave it off like a South African beauty
Or get in on lock like Bob Marley
You can rock it straight like Oprah Winfrey
If it's not what's on your head, it's what's underneath, and say..." - India Arie

Many years later I finally realize how liberating this song actually is.

Week 1 Starter Locs Update + Managing Heat Damage

Week one with these babies have been everything I have ever dreamed of. I have struggled with my hair for many years and now I finally feel like I'm doing the right thing.

I love the low maintenance of my locs. I love the simplicity. I love the versatility.

My only regret is not starting these sooner.

EST. 1.11.17

On January 11, 2017 I finally started my loc journey. I have been patiently waiting to start locing my hair for some time now, and I finally found the courage to do it. I have been a fan of locs for many years, but I was too afraid of the permanent commitment.

After many years of great hair days and horrible hair days I finally found the courage to do my hair like I've always wanted. I am not alone in the loc'd hair lifestyle. My mother has sisterlocs. My older sister and best friend both have traditional locs. So I think I'll have plenty of encouragement and motivation on my personal journey.
